Renault to stop selling diesel cars from 2020

Renault’s global CEO Thierry Bollore said diesel is naturally decreasing in terms of proportion of sale globally. “Today, there is a clear regulatory approach. We have decided to limit the development of diesel powertrain when Euro VII comes,” he said, further confirming that the company will stop selling diesel cars in India from next year

The company, which unveiled its compact multi-purpose vehicle Triber in India, is bringing the MPV only in petrol engine option as part of the strategy even as it prepares to introduce electric vehicles in the near future.

Maruti Suzuki India has confirmed that all its diesel cars that come with the 1.3-litre DDIS 200 and the newly launched 1.5-litre DDIS 225 engine will be phased out by April 2020.

The company which released the financial results for the 2018-19 financial year today announced that from April 1, 2020, none of its diesel cars will be on sale in India.

The company has stated as the BS-6 norms kick in from April 2020, Maruti will mainly focus on upgrading its petrol engine line-up. In fact, 16 Maruti Suzuki petrol models need to be upgraded to BS6, including the passenger and commercial vehicle segment.

The latest updates emerged at the global unveiling of the Triber compact seven-seat vehicle in the country.

It is believed that Renault will focus on the development of the EVs as part of its mid-term plan for 2022.

A couple of months back, Maruti Suzuki had announced its plans to stop selling diesel cars in the country post 2020. More details in this regard will be known in the days to come.
Collaborative project

The Triber is the outcome of a joint project between the Renault teams in India and France and is the world’s first vehicle specifically designed for the Indian market, the company said.

The sub-4-metre MPV has been conceived, developed and produced in India, for Indian customers first, before it is taken to the world, Bollore said.

On electric vehicles, he said India will not be left behind in Renault’s global plans. The company globally plans to introduce eight new electric cars by 2022.

The Triber, which was unveiled on Wednesday, is aimed at recovering market share Renault lost to rivals over the last couple of years. Renault’s small car Kwid and sport-utility vehicle Duster did manage to make significant inroads in the domestic market but lack of new launches and subdued response to its last product Captur SUV led to a sharp drop in sales.

Bolloré said the company has made mistakes in the past but the fact that India will be the third largest auto market in the near future is a good enough reason for the company to keep investing in the country.

He expects Renault India to double its vehicle sales by 2022.
