Former Indian skipper MS Dhoni celebrates his 38th birthday today. Dhoni made his international debut at the age of 23 against Bangladesh on December 23, 2004, and the rest is history

At some point during India’s World Cup game against Bangladesh last week, 21-year-old Rishabh Pant  an upcoming wicketkeeper-batsman being hailed as a successor to MS Dhoni was hitting boundaries at will. At the other end was Dhoni himself - sedate, focused, soaking in the match, and an absolute contrast to Pant’s youthful exuberance.

Former India captain-turned commentator Sourav Ganguly, on air at the time, was fawning over Pant’s fluent batting. And then, he turned to his fellow commentator with a question: “How good was Dhoni at Pant’s age?”

The over ended; a commercial break followed. The question stayed unanswered.

First, happy birthday, Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The cricketer turned 38 on Sunday (July 7) and birthday wishes are pouring in for him on social media. #HappyBirthdayDhoni and #Mahi are the two top trends on Twitter and also, it's flooded with pictures of Dhoni.

Post India's victory against Sri Lanka in Headingley in the ongoing Cricket World Cup, Dhoni's birthday celebrations kickstarted with his wife Sakshi, little daughter Ziva, colleagues Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant and other friends.

Sakshi treated us to pictures from inside the celebrations, in which we can see Dhoni's face smeared with cake. In another post, Dhoni can be seen cutting three cakes with Ziva while the other surround him.

A surprise choice for the captaincy in 2007, MS Dhoni-led India in 200 ODIs, of which India won 110 matches. At home, he captained the team to 43 wins out of 73 matches. Till now, MS Dhoni has represented India in 90 Tests, 348 ODIs and 98 T20Is. He has scored more than 10,000 ODI runs, and near about 5,000 runs in Test cricket.

Dhoni, who ended India's long drought of a genuine wicket-keeper batsman, holds the record of most number of stumpings in international cricket - he has affected 123 stumpings.

There was a lot of hype around Dhoni as soon as India started their campaign for the 2019 edition of the world cup. The 38-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman and former captain, also the longest-serving Indian skipper till date was playing his last

Currently playing in his 4th World Cup, MS Dhoni has been continuously criticised for his lack of intent with the bat. Dhoni, who is considered one of the best finishers of the game, has been seen struggling to find boundaries and accelerate the run rate.

MS Dhoni's 28 off 52 balls against Afghanistan, one of the weaker teams in the tournament raised several concerns. Dhoni took some flak during India's failed run chase against England, when India suffered its loss in the tournament.

Despite recent lack of form, Mahendra Singh Dhoni will always be remembered as one of the best captains in the history of not just Indian cricket.

Cricket World Cup 2019: Ross Taylor defends under-fire captain Kane Williamson

Veteran Black Caps batsman Ross Taylor says Kane Williamson hasn't become a bad captain overnight.
Taylor defended the New Zealand skipper at a press conference ahead of their big World Cup encounter against England at Chester-le-Street (9.30pm Wednesday NZT), after Williamson had come in for criticism in the UK media for his 'timid' approach to leading the side.
Taylor said Williamson was a "world-class" leader.

Ross Taylor defended the captaincy credentials of Kane Williamson as he called on New Zealand's batsmen to lighten their talisman's workload ahead of a pivotal World Cup clash against England.

Williamson has amassed 454 runs in six tournament innings at a phenomenal average of 113.5, though his leadership has come under scrutiny for being too passive.

Williamson has amassed 454 runs in six tournament innings at a phenomenal average of 113.5, though his leadership has come under scrutiny for being too passive.

Unfavourable comparisons have been made with Williamson's predecessor, Brendon McCullum, following successive defeats to Pakistan and Australia that have left the Kiwis' World Cup hopes in the balance.

However, they will seal their place in the semi-finals if they overcome England at Chester-le-Street on Wednesday.

Taylor said: "I've played under many different captains. Brendon was the extreme and Kane has his own unique style as well. You have to be true to yourself and be authentic and more often than not you get the right

Taylor said: "Archer has added a different dimension and balance to their side. He's a fantastic bowler, but we probably haven't seen the best of him with his batting because he's a fantastic batsman as well."

The last time Taylor faced England in a one-day international, the 35-year-old registered a stunning 181 not out in Dunedin last year to underpin a five-wicket victory.

He has yet to reach three figures in this year's World Cup, but added: "I have felt good throughout the whole tournament, a couple of strangles down the leg-side and a couple of good balls, that is the nature of the beast and cricket.

"You know you are not too far away from hopefully getting a few out the middle and getting that confidence up."

By Niall Anderson in Chester-le-Street

When the Black Caps were destroying England's Cricket World Cup hopes in 2015, little did they know the revolution they were inspiring.

Routed for 123 by the best figures in New Zealand ODI history – Tim Southee's 7-33 – England's ultimate humiliation was still to come in the Black Caps' chase, where the hosts needed a mere 12.2 overs to storm to victory behind Brendon McCullum's 77 from 25 balls.

So severe was the thrashing that the floodlights didn't even need to be turned on for the day-night encounter, and the manner of the defeat – the lowest point of a World Cup campaign that saw England crash out in pool play - gave captain Eoin Morgan an epiphany.

Is this the last "All you need to know" we're going to read?

Unfortunately, my dear reader, you're probably stuck with me for at least another game yet. A victory sends the Black Caps into a 2 v 3 semifinal against either Australia or India, and a loss …. well, probably sends the Black Caps into a 1 v 4 semifinal against either Australia or India.

The only way the Black Caps don't end up playing Australia or India in a semifinal is if they get hammered by a historic margin against England – say, the reverse of their 2015 encounter – and Pakistan thrash Bangladesh by a similarly ludicrous margin on Friday. That would see them miss out on the semifinals on net run rate. The chances of New Zealand making the semifinals? $1.01, say the bookmakers.

Ok, but beating England is still important, right?

It sure would be for their prospects of winning the World Cup. The last two games, and in all honesty, the World Cup as a whole, haven't shown many indications that the Black Caps can beat the three hot favourites for the Cup – they're yet to have a convincing win over a strong side.

But, England had a shock loss to Sri Lanka, have struggled at times when chasing a total, and New Zealand showed against Australia that they definitely are good enough to put themselves in a position to win – it's just whether they can capitalise when it counts. While they are definite underdogs, the Black Caps absolutely can beat England – and they'll need to, for anyone to believe in their chances of winning the World Cup.

How dangerous is this England side?

Extremely. Their batting lineup is outrageously deep - their No 9 and 10 batsmen both average over 30 in first-class cricket – which gives them the licence to flay the bat from ball one.
They've passed 310 on five occasions at the tournament, and, playing at a Chester-le-Street ground at which Sri Lanka and the West Indies just combined for 653 runs, albeit on a different wicket, Ross Taylor indicated he expects scores of 300+ to be required.

India vs Bangladesh, ICC Cricket World Cup 2019:

India vs Bangladesh, ICC Cricket World Cup 2019: Questions persist for India despite qualifying for semis

Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah's brilliance bailed India out yet again as the 'Men in Blue' sealed their spot in the semi-finals for the seventh time in World Cup history with a hard-fought 28-run win over Bangladesh.

India then got regular wickets during the Bangladesh innings, with Hardik Pandya's (3/60) efforts with the ball playing a key role in restricting the opposition batsmen in the middle overs.

The game was considered done and dusted when Shakib was sent back to the pavilion after getting foxed by a slower ball from Pandya, departing for 66 with another 136 left to chase with just four wickets in hand.

However, the Bangladeshi lower-order refused to give up, and Mohammad Saifuddin (51 not out) and Sabbir Rahman (36) giving India another reminder of why switching off after getting the main threat out can prove costly.

India collected their sixth win in eight games, but their display hasn't quite been convincing since their victory over Pakistan at Old Trafford.

Had it not been for Bumrah's dismissal of Rubel Hossain and Mustafizur Rahman with back-to-back yorkers to end the Bangladeshi chase, India might have ended up on the wrong side of the result, and could've been made to wait a little longer to confirm their berth in the knockouts.

The defeat though, ended Bangladesh's slim hopes of a place in the last four after they had impressed during wins over South Africa and the West Indies.

The day belonged to the in-form Sharma, who played an attacking knock, hitting seven fours and five sixes in his 92-ball innings while being cheered on by another largely pro-India crowd in Birmingham.

Sharma and opening partner KL Rahul put on 180 — the highest stand for the first wicket in the tournament — to get India off to a flying start.

But Sharma should have been out for nine, only for Tamim Iqbal to drop a simple catch at deep midwicket following a mistimed pull off paceman Mustafizur.

Sharma was finally was caught at extra cover by Liton Das off the bowling of Soumya Sarkar and Rahul, who filled an opener's slot following an injury to Shikhar Dhawan, was caught behind off Rubel for 77.

Mustafizur took five wickets, including star batsman Kohli for 26, to check India's surge.

The paceman struck twice in the space of three balls to dismiss both Kohli and Pandya.

Rishabh Pant once again showed his worth at the number four position with a brisk 48, using the short boundary at one side of Edgbaston to his advantage.

Dhoni, who received flak for his slow innings in India's defeat by England on Sunday — their only loss so far this tournament — chipped in with a 33-ball 35.

Paceman Mohammed Shami struck early in Bangladesh's reply when Tamim, who made 22, chopped the ball onto his stumps.

Shakib struck his sixth fifty-plus score that includes two hundreds to keep Bangladesh in hunt.

But Pandya's second spell saw the all-rounder account for Liton and Shakib to leave Bangladesh struggling at 179-6 in the 34th over.

Shakib, who has been Bangladesh's go-to man, played well for his 46th ODI fifty but was undone by a slower ball and caught at extra cover.
