International Yoga Day 2019: All you need to know about preparations ahead of the annual event
Yoga is a form of exercise that originated in ancient India and is practised widely across the world today.
Yoga not only enhances your physical strength but also contributes largely towards your mental health and spiritual growth.
New Delhi: Jharkhand capital Ranchi will be the venue for the main event for International Yoga Day on June 21 and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend it, AYUSH Ministry officials said on Saturday.
The event will be held at the Prabhat Tara ground and around 30,000 people are expected to participate in it, they said.
Looking at the popularity of yoga, Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggested at the UN Assembly that yoga be given a special day as it is beneficial for everyone and making it a world event would help in spreading awareness about its benefits. So, on 21st June 2015, World Yoga Day was observed for the first time across the world and has since been celebrated annually.
Yoga, which helps in maintaining mental and physical well-being of a person, is widely practiced to lead a healthy life.
To mark its significance and raise awareness about the many benefits of yoga, the United Nations proclaimed 21 June as the International Day of Yoga in December 2014.
The theme for this year’s celebrations, which is marked by various events organised across the world, is ‘Climate Action’.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had suggested the date – June 21 – in his UN address, will lead the main event scheduled to mark the International Day of Yoga 2019 celebrations to be held at Prabhat Tara, Ranchi, Jharkhand on Friday from 6 am to 8 am. Approximately 30,000 people are expected to participate in the main event, for which preparations are in full swing.
International Yoga Day
The United Nations General Assembly on December 11, 2014, announced that June 21 will be seen as International Yoga Day or World Yoga Day. Since 2015, International Yoga Day is been celebrated worldwide.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September of 2014 addressed the UN assembly and discussed the essence of Yoga
Yoga might have waited quite a bit to have its ‘own’ day, but thanks to India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, since 2014 this special occasion is observed all over the world.
Being such an ingrained part of India’s history, the Prime Minister went to the United Nations in 2014 with a proposal to create a special day for yoga.
In the assembly, he gave an inspiring speech that convinced more than 170 countries to approve the International Day of Yoga, which would take place annually on June 21st.
“Yoga is an invaluable gift from our ancient tradition.Yoga embodies unity of mind and body, thought and action… a holistic approach is valuable to our health and our well-being. Yoga is not just about exercise; it’s a way to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature.” — Prime Minister Modi at the UN General Assembly.
In its first year (2015), around 36,000 yogis gathered in New Delhi for a record-breaking event, where people of over 80 nationalities performed the largest yoga session in history (although the number has increased every year since then). It marked the biggest celebration of the first ever Day of Yoga with the theme of yoga for harmony and peace.
