Ganesh Chaturthi is a 10 day Hindu festival celebrating the birthday of the elephant-headed God. It is celebrated across various states of India with grand celebrations taking place at Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Andra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
It starts on the fourth day of the first fortnight in the month of Bhadrapada according to Hindu calendar. The idol of Ganesh (also called as Ganpati) is brought to homes or community gatherings and after rituals by the local priest; is commemorated for the number of days of the festival. These idols are later immersed into water bodies marking the end of the festival.

The number of days one is willing to keep the idols before immersing into water bodies depends on the oath taken by the owners. The common practice is to immerse the idols on the odd numbered days since the time it has been home, like 1.5, 3, 5, 7, 9 or 11th day.
Most of the small sized Ganesh idols are immersed in lakes within 1.5 days of the festival. But size of the idol has nothing to do with the number of days it is going to be home, all depends on the vow taken by the family or community venerating it.
