Narendra Modi with top award

PM Modi inspects guard of honour in Male, will address Maldives parliament

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday reached Maldives and is expected to hold talks during the first overseas trip of his second term in the government.

UAE President Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan today announced that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be honoured with the Zayed Medal, the UAE's highest civil honour.

The medal, awarded to kings presidents and heads of states, was conferred upon Modi for boosting relations between the Emirates and India. Previously, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping have also been conferred with the honour.

PM Modi has visited 10 West Asian countries since 2014, more than his four predecessors combined.

Despite large volumes of trade, and some eight million Indians remitting some $35 billion (2015 figure) back home each year from Gulf States, investments had remained negligible for decades.

According to experts, things started changing under PM Modi
.
Boost to India-UAE relations is part of India's larger Gulf project that includes even defence and counter-terrorism partnerships with the countries in the region.

Due to his bold outreach, PM Modi is also seen to be playing a larger stabilising role in the Arab world.

According to an expert , India's deeper demographic and geographic connections to the UAE and also contrasting closeness to Iran give Modi the platform to situate India as an ideal partner for stabilising the entire Gulf.

"On April 12, 2019, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi was decorated with the Order of St Andrew the Apostle - the highest state decoration of Russia - for exceptional services in promoting special and privileged strategic partnership between the Russian Federation and the Republic of India and friendly relations between the Russian and Indian peoples," announced a Russian government statement.
