Surat - fire accident latest update

At least 20 people, mostly students,

 were killed after a massive fire broke out at a coaching center in Gujarat's Surat on Friday afternoon.

Videos posted by witnesses on social media showed several students jumping out of windows on the top floor of the four-storey building to escape the blaze.



Surat Police Commissioner Satish Sharma told that the fire is suspected have started either from an air conditioner compressor or some electrical equipment in (one of) the classes.

The fire then spread through the wooden stairway, which connected the third floor to the terrace, where the classes were being held.

The students were attending tuition classes when the fire broke out at the Takshila building. Officials said at least 10 students on the third and fourth floors jumped to the ground to save themselves from the fire and smoke.

The fire which engulfed the four-storey building started at the ground floor, forcing students to take cover at roof. At least 20 students were killed, either due to suffocation or falling off the windows in an attempt to escape fire.

FIRE BRIGADE WAS 40 MINUTES LATE

The witnesses claimed that the fire brigade arrived at the spot 45 minutes late.



"My daughter was inside the building when the fire broke out. Rescuers from the fire station, which is not more than 2 km away, took almost 45 minutes to come. Even though my daughter was saved, she is in trauma. At least 5-6 parents are still looking for their missing children," father of a rescued girl told ANI.

A day after a fire at a coaching centre killed 20 students, Surat Police on Saturday arrested one of the three accused who ran the tution classes. The other two are absconding. An FIR has been registered against them for culpable homicide.

 Municipal corporations across Ahmedabad and Vadodara also ordered all coaching centres in these cities to be closed till further orders.

Rajkot civic body, meanwhile, has directed its officials to seal all such premises where fire-fighting equipment was not in place.
